Bradford Overview

As you watch the school video, you'll hear principal Naomi Kirkman talk about the basic curriculum, our partnership with Montclair State University, and our Bradford CARES curriculum which we began in 2009. Here is some more information about each of these important areas as well as some additional facts about our school.

Mission Statement

Bradford is dedicated to cultivating confident, curious, and kindhearted citizens capable of asking thoughtful questions, navigating complex challenges, and connecting with the world around them. Through our rigorous university-backed academic and social-emotional curriculum and our deeply invested faculty, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive community of life-long learners.

At Bradford, our motto is "Everyone Teaches, Everyone Learns." English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies comprise the basic curriculum. Our curriculum is based on the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, and we use a variety of resources to meet these standards. Students also receive instruction in art, music, physical education, technology, library, and Spanish at least once a week. Technology is integrated into all subject areas. In every subject area, Bradford students are taught to become thoughtful readers and writers, creative problem solvers, and critical thinkers. In an effort to meet the academic needs of students at all levels, Bradford students may participate in SAIL (Students Accelerated In Learning) and RTI (Response to Intervention), which provides additional academic support for students in need. In addition, there is focus on differentiated instruction in all classrooms, with most classrooms incorporating an inclusive classroom structure. Teachers are skilled at modifying the curriculum to meet the individual learning styles and needs of their students.

Bradford - MSU Partnership

Bradford enjoys a dynamic partnership with our walking-distance neighbor, Montclair State University (MSU). Examples of MSU learning experiences include weekly visits to the John J. Cali School of Music for recitals, health/physical education stations and STEM stations with the College of Education, visits to the College of Science and Mathematics' Forensics Lab, Read Across America Day at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, Kasser Theater Backstage tours and dance performances via the College of the Arts, Montclair history and social studies lessons via the College of Humanities, on-campus Field Days and walk-a-thon, and more.

Bradford CARES

To responsibly educate and nurture the whole child, Bradford places great emphasis on anti-bullying and character education. Teachers implement the anti-bullying curriculum of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation. The school also offers character education through the Bradford CARES curriculum, in which children spend time learning about Bradford CARES values: Cooperation, Acceptance, Respect and Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control. Teachers utilize the Responsive Classroom approach in their classrooms, beginning each day with a morning meeting and emphasizing the development of strong social and emotional skills.

Health and Wellness

Bradford Running Club's before-school program is facilitated by the physical education teacher for grades 2-5. A Health and Wellness program is organized by parents and faculty, emphasizing nutrition and exercise. Bradford also hosts monthly Walk-to-School days and healthy breakfasts for each grade. We offer outdoor and environmental learning projects, including gardening, which are integrated into the Science curriculum. Bradford students plant and harvest nutritious foods, and the school hosts an annual "Pesto Fest," during which students sample pesto made from basil grown in the school garden.

Parent Involvement

Parent and caregiver involvement in the classrooms is welcomed. Supported by an active and enthusiastic PTA, the extended Bradford community gathers for many occasions throughout the year, including a Pancake Breakfast, a Full STEAM Ahead night, Bedtime and Books, music concerts, book fairs, a family movie night, a community service day, and food and toy drives. The PTA also administers an after-school enrichment program.
