Performing Arts

1120: Chorus With a Kick, Grades: 1st & 2nd
Children learn vocal technique in a fun, playful atmosphere, as they develop breath control, range, pure tone, head and chest registers, enunciation, and expression. The repertory will be drawn from classical, folk, jazz, Latin, rock, R&B, musical theater styles, and sung in a variety of languages. Students will have various performance opportunities.

Prerequisite: Students must pass a screening to participate this course.

1121: Fiddlin' Around, Grades: 1st & 2nd
Students will learn how to play simple folk tunes and focus on bowing, posture and fingering. Each student will be provided with a 1⁄4 or 1⁄2 size violin to use for the duration of the course and to take home in order to practice the songs and exercises.

Note: Students taking this course should NOT be enrolled in violin lessons elsewhere.

1125 Drama Rama 1, Grades: 1st
This course is perfect for children who enjoy channeling their energies into dramatic activities. The children are encouraged to develop their imaginations through a variety of theater games that enhance their sensory and perceptual awareness. Units studied in class include: improvisation, theatre terminology, characterization, and learning to read a script using expression, projection, and inflection.

Prerequisite: Students should have confidence performing in front of other people

1138: Drama Rama 2, Grades: 2nd
This course is perfect for children who enjoy channeling their energies into dramatic activities. Visual Arts

1128: Dynamite Drawing, Grades: 1st & 2nd
Students will expand their knowledge of drawing by exploring different types of drawings, subjects and materials. In the process of learning about drawing, students will also be refining fine motor skills and learn to work like an artist. This class focuses not only on the three basic drawing subjects (still-life, figure drawing and landscape), but also explores portrait, pattern/zentangle, and abstract drawing, all while having fun!

1131: Painter's Passion, Grades: 1st & 2nd
Students will learn about the wonderful world of paintings - still life, landscape, portrait, and abstract. Students will use watercolor and tempera paint while learning painting vocabulary, and about supplies and techniques.

1133: Printer's Paradise, Grade: 2nd
Students will be introduced to the wonderful world of printmaking by exploring various printing techniques such as stamping, monoprinting, foam printing, and texture rubbings. Students will also learn about the origins of printmaking, proper use of materials and tools, and how to create an interesting composition. Printer's Paradise offers a world of learning within a fun and creative environment!

Note: This class is limited to second graders only, due to materials and tools used.

P.E., Movement & Health

2123: Advanced Gymnastics, Grades: 1st & 2nd
For the child who demonstrates unusual strength, balance, coordination, rhythm, flexibility, grace, poise, agility and body control. This gymnastics course exposes the student to exercises in movement, tumbling, and other physical exercises. Students will create and record their own routines so they can be critiqued.

2127: Dance Unlimited, Grades: 1st & 2nd
This course exposes students to choreography from modern pop culture as well as the merengue and conga. The students will learn dances to do individually, in pairs, and in a group setting. The course concludes with students choreographing their own dances.

Language Arts

3120: Young Scholar's Book Club, Grades: 2nd
Students will be exposed to a variety of high-quality, fun, and interesting children's literature to enhance their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. The children will participate in writing, art, and dramatic activities to extend what they learn from their reading and discussion of stories, folktales, and chapter books.

3126: Jumping Into Jr. Great Books, Grades: 1st
Students will do in-class reading, interpretation and drama using the Jr. Great Books curriculum. There will be art and writing assignments to ensure student interest and comprehension.

3136: Nishuane News, Grades: 2nd
Students will work on publishing a newspaper to be distributed at the end of a cycle. In this paper, the students will focus on the standards for writing, reading, and math. Students will conduct interviews and research, collect data, and write reviews and articles about school happenings.

Mathematics

4121: Whiz Kids: Problem Solving, Grade: 2nd
This course offers students the opportunity to work together on Project Problems. Project Problems are challenging, long-term, hands-on, activity-based, complex problems that provide students with the opportunity to apply their math knowledge in areas such as addition, subtraction, geometry, estimation, measurement, data interpretation, and much more.

4130: The Mathematics of Puzzles & Games, Grade: 1st
Tease your brain. Challenge your memory. Strengthen your competitive skills. Using nothing more than a simple grasp of math, you will discover how to play and solve mathematical puzzles with speed and accuracy. What are you waiting for? Come and play!

Science

5121: Science All Around Us, Grades: 1st
This course covers magnets, rocks, insects and arachnids, microscopes, the heart, weather/clouds, and helicopters.

5124: Isaac's Kids, Grades: 2nd
Students will learn about the planet Earth. They will find the answers to questions like: What is the earth made of? How long has it existed? How does it change over time? What kinds of things happen under the surface? Students will also learn about the impact that humans have on Earth and discuss ways to prevent negative changes.

Social Studies

6120: When East Meets West, Grades: 1st & 2nd
Students will explore a world where 1.4 billion people communicate in Mandarin every day. Students will find out about the Chinese people. They will learn some common words and expressions that speakers of Mandarin use daily. They will learn about famous places in China and about Chinese culture (festivals, costumes, and art). During this class, students will also create picture books and tell their stories using Mandarin.
