Welcome to the School Nurse's page. I am always glad to assist your family with any issues relating to health at home and at school. The school nurse is on duty full time at Nishuane. Check here for health information throughout the school year.

All information given to the nurse is kept confidential and maintained in the nurse's office

You will receive either a call from the nurse and/or a note in your child's backpack if he/she has visited the nurse.

Illness

Parents are notified when a child becomes ill during the school day. There are specific reasons such as elevated temperature, vomiting and skin rashes that require children to be excluded from school according to Montclair Board of Education policy. A child may be excluded based on the clinical assessment of the nurse.

Absences:

If your child or children are or will be absent, please call the main office and leave a message on the attendance line at 973-509-4222. Include the reason for the absence and the estimated time that your child (children) will be absent.

Health Status Changes:

Please let the nurse's office know if there have been any changes in your child's health status and if medications have been added or discontinued. Please remember to update all emergency information as well as changes in family, environment, or significant factors that may affect your child's physical and emotional health.

Medications:

Medications may not be given in school without permission from the child's doctor and the parents/guardians. This applies to both prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Medications can be given by the nurse on a long term basis (e.g. asthma meds) or on an emergency basis (e.g. epi-pen for severe allergic reactions) only if a form is completed by your child's physician. Forms are available in the nurse's office. Any short term medications (e.g. antibiotics) can be given by the nurse if they are provided in a labeled prescription bottle with the doctor's written order to administer. This applies to over-the-counter medicines (e.g. cough medicine, Mylanta). Again, a doctor's order is required to administer the medicine. Children are not permitted to carry medications. An adult should bring all medications to the nurse's office at the school.

Peanut Policy:

All classrooms at Nishuane School are peanut-free. During lunch, peanut products are allowed. Peanut-free tables are provided for students with nut allergies. All students who eat at these tables bring nut-free lunches.

Physical Exams and Immunizations:

Immunizations on each child are kept on file as well as reports of physical examinations and emergency information. All Kindergarten and transfer students shall have a physical examination prior to the start of school and up-to-date immunizations. Physical examination forms are available at the time of registration at central office or in the nurse's office at the school. Physicals are recommended for students entering 6th grade.

Screenings

Students are screened for height, weight, vision, and hearing according NJ Department of Education guidelines as follows:

Vision: Grades K, 2 and 4
Hearing: Grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 4
Height/Weight: Grades K-5
Scoliosis: Grade 5

Parents are notified about any abnormalities.

Student injuries

Any injuries such as fractures, stitches, etc. must be reported to the school so that accommodations can be made if necessary.
