National Spanish Exam

Ninety-two world language students from Montclair High School attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2018 National Spanish Examinations.

MHS students earned a total of one gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze awards along with 62 honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with nearly 160,000 students participating in 2018.”

Students from Montclair High School have a long history of high achievement on these exams. This year’s participants are the students of María González-Block, Silvia Jankowski, Ikenna Okaome, Monica Lavosky, Elizabeth Reyes, Beatriz Romero and Maribel Tarrillo.

The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades six through twelve, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

National Latin Exam

Of the 92 students of MHS Latin teacher Jo Anne Manse who took the exam, 9 students were awarded the Silver Medal, or Maxima cum Laude; 11 students received a Magna cum Laude, and 11 students received cum Laude for a total of 31 awards.

National French Contest

The National French Contest/Le Grand Concours is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students of French in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad take a written test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes. This year, 74,250 students competed nationwide.

On March 26, 51 of MHS French teacher Gaelle Cahayla's students took the test. We received one gold, eight silver and eight bronze awards, as well as 24 honorable mentions.
